Europe’s Surplus Food Valued at $8 Billion

Unwanted surplus food in storage in the European Communities is now valued at more than $8 billion, demonstrating the urgent need for reform of the bloc’s farm policy, a report said Monday.

In its 1985 review of agricultural markets, the Brussels-based European Commission, responsible for the day-to-day management of the communities, said that at the end of October, 977,000 tons of butter, 730,000 tons of beef, 18.4 million tons of grains and 502,000 tons of powdered skim milk were in Common Market warehouses.
