LETTTERS TO THE EDITOR : Mayor Tennant Criticized

Share

Your article on Mayor Tennant’s criticism of a commission report that found BKK more polluting than the proposed Irwindale trash-to-energy plant raises many disturbing questions about Tennant and his relentless zeal to kill the Irwindale plant. This is the same man who has done very little, if anything at all, to protect his own constituents in West Covina who were exposed to cancer-causing contaminants emanating from the BKK dump. Tennant is so concerned about air pollution from the proposed Irwindale plant, but what specifically did he do to help West Covina residents and their children all the years they were suffering from dangerous levels of air pollution from BKK dump? When West Covina commissioners point out that even with new protective devices, 30,500 pounds of pollutants will be released daily from BKK dump, compared to 12,400 pounds daily from the Irwindale plant, Tennant blasts them for their honesty. . . .

L.A. Sanitation Districts has a plan to build a huge trash-to-energy plant at Puente Hills dump, with a 450-foot stack belching contaminants throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Hacienda Heights has dangerous water contamination problems as does the whole San Gabriel Valley, so this plan should be discarded. Let’s make our undrinkable water safe before we cause further air and water contamination in an area that already has the dubious distinction of being known throughout the country as “Smogsville U.S.A.”
