Cooling problems that prompted the Dec. 26 shutdown of the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant near Sacramento are not apt to occur at other plants with similar equipment, according to a report by Babcock & Wilcox, builder of Rancho Seco and other plants. The report noted there are differences in various plants built by the firm and loss of power to the control systems of other installations “would probably result in significantly less severe temperature changes.” A federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman said there will be further studies to see if potential problems at the other plants can be minimized. Rancho Seco is expected to be back in operation in six to eight weeks.
