Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee, reported “significant and constructive progress” after a two-day meeting with North and South Korea on their dispute over staging the 1988 Olympic Games.

The talks were adjourned without agreement until June 10. But both sides made some substantial concessions in their protracted conflict over North Korea’s demand to be the co-host for the Games, which five years ago were awarded to the South Korean capital, Seoul.

According to IOC officials and spokesmen of the rival Korean Olympic Committees, North Korea backed away from its earlier insistence on organizing half the events of the Games, and South Korea dropped its earlier refusal to discuss any sharing of events with North Korea.
