Remodelers Diversifying

Room additions, kitchen remodeling and the complete rehabilitation of residential units will be the top remodeling jobs in 1986, according to a survey conducted by Remodeling magazine, a trade publication.

Published in the November issue of the magazine, the survey showed that more than 80% of the remodelers surveyed have been in business at least six years and that the typical remodeler has been in business 10 years, has five employees and averaged $500,000 in business in 1984, according to Michael J. Hanley, the magazine’s publisher,

Most of the surveyed remodelers do three types of jobs: interior residential remodeling, exterior residential remodeling and a specialty such as kitchens or baths. In contrast to 15 years ago, when most remodelers were specialty contractors, today’s remodelers “have more versatile” businesses, Hanley said.
