James Butler set an American record of 32.91 seconds in the 300-meter dash at the Florida All-Comers meet at the University of Florida.

Butler, formerly of Oklahoma State, beat the former record of 33.17 set by Elliott Quow of Rutgers in 1982. The only person to turn in a faster time in the event is Italian Olympian Pietro Mennea, who set the world record of 32.84 in 1978. Butler also won the 60-meter dash in 6.30 seconds.

Olympic silver medalist Antonio McKay surpassed his own American record in the 400 meters, but his time of 45.64 was wiped out because he was called for a lane violation.
