Killed Israeli, 2 Guerrilla Groups Say
Two Palestinian guerrilla groups opposed to Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat claimed responsibility Sunday for a gunfire attack that killed an Israeli border guard in the West Bank city of Nablus.
The Saturday attack wounded another officer and five Palestinians, Israeli military and Palestinian sources said.
One claim of responsibility was made by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a Marxist group under the leadership of Dr. George Habash, in a communique issued in Damascus, Syria.
The communique said a “PFLP unit based in occupied (Israeli) territories staged the Nablus operation that resulted in the killing and wounding of a number of Israeli troops.”
The other claim was made to the Beirut newspaper An Nahar on behalf of a breakaway faction from Arafat’s mainstream Fatah group headed by Col. Abu Moussa.
According to the newspaper, a caller said that Abu Moussa’s “Fatah Uprising Movement” was responsible for the Nablus attack.
