GTE may spin off its Sprint long-distance unit.

The telecommunications giant reportedly has talked with several companies about spinning off its unprofitable Sprint long-distance telephone service. Mary Johnston of the Yankee Group consulting firm told clients that Stamford, Conn.-based GTE plans to enter a joint venture with United Telecommunications of Kansas City, Mo. The venture may combine money-losing Sprint with United Telecom’s U.S. Telecom subsidiary.
