The mystery of the noise from a buried coffin in a Bavarian village cemetery has been solved--gravediggers unearthed the coffin and made certain that the 93-year-old woman inside was really dead.

The mystery began several days ago at the woman’s burial in Gaehnheim when gravediggers said they heard a knocking on the coffin lid and were convinced they had buried her alive. Newspaper throughout West Germany published reports about the mysterious noise, and local officials ordered an exhumation.

Public prosecutor Elmar Fischer, who supervised the exhumation, said the knocking the gravediggers heard when the coffin was lowered into the grave was caused by the lid splitting under the weight of the earth shoveled on top of it.
