John Smale, president and chief executive of Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, has been elected chairman of the company.

He replaces Owen Butler, who announced his retirement from the company Tuesday. P&G; is one of the nation’s largest makers of consumer products.

John Pepper, P&G;’s executive vice president, was elected company president.
