A program started in September to provide meals to senior citizens at discount prices has attracted nearly 300 seniors each month to the St. Francis Medical Center cafeteria, officials reported Monday.

The program, which offers meals at a 20% discount, “is very popular,” said Gretchen Schmidt, cafeteria and catering manager for the medical center.

The project, which was started by the center’s dietary department to provide nutritious meals to people over the age of 60 who may be living on low or fixed incomes, draws nearly 300 people a month, Schmidt said.

On weekdays meals are served from 4 to 7 p.m. Weekends hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Also, a special event to highlight the project is held each month, Schmidt said.

This month’s event is scheduled from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s auditorium and will include dinner and a Dixieland jazz band. There is a flat fee for seniors of $2.95 for the meal, which includes a salad, entree and dessert. Reservations for the event are recommended but not required.

The program is not restricted to Lynwood residents. For more information, call (213) 603-6181.
