3 States Reported to Have 75% of Jail AIDS Cases
Prisons and jails in three states account for 75% of the AIDS cases in the nation’s penal institutions, according to a study presented at a San Diego press conference Wednesday.
Those states are New York, New Jersey and Florida.
The study conducted for the American Correctional Assn. and the National Institute of Justice calls for an intense education program aimed at prison inmates and staffers as the best method to dispel myths about acquired immune deficiency syndrome and to curb transmission of the deadly disease within prisons.
The study said prisons with a high rate of AIDS among inmates house large numbers of intravenous drug users and homosexuals.
The study gave no specific rules for preventing the spread of the disease or for dealing with inmates who suffer from AIDS.
A total of 765 cases of AIDS were reported by the prisons and jails that responded to a study survey. Of those cases, 179 were listed as current, and 322 resulted in death.
