LOST AND FOUND DEPT.: What do the Residents look like? No one knows for sure, largely because the reclusive cult faves (who recently made a rare appearance at the Palace), perform wearing a headgear disguise that looks like a giant eyeball with a top hat. The eyeballs, originally designed for a 1978 album cover session at a value of nearly $2,000 each, have become a band trademark. Which makes it all the more distressing to hear that someone stole one of the heirlooms from the group’s dressing room after the Residents show here. The band doesn’t give interviews, but a spokesman for the group said it has put a “curse” on the culprit, declaring the irreplaceable eye “unclean.” The group, who was in New York for a series of club dates, performed “memorial services” for the eye at each appearance, in the hope of speeding the eye’s recovery. Until the eye reappears, the band member who wore the missing eyeball has appeared on stage wearing a black tuxedo and an oversized skull.
