Drifting snow blocked roads in parts of northern Michigan as a windy storm pushed wind chills far below zero, and a separate storm raced up the Appalachians with freezing rain and snow. “Most all the side roads are closed,” Chippewa County sheriff’s dispatcher Debbie Harrison said at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula got six inches of snow and northern Wisconsin got up to four inches. The National Weather Service said winds up to 40 m.p.h. could produce a wind-chill factor of 60 below zero across the eastern Dakotas and parts of Minnesota. In the East, scattered rain and up to two inches of snow fell along the Appalachians.
