Westminster : Youth Shelter Will Ask City to Provide Funds

Because of federal budget cuts, a Los Alamitos youth shelter will ask the City Council tonight for funds to stay open, the shelter’s founder said.
The council will consider giving $3,500 to the Casa de Bienvenidos Youth Shelter from Community Development Block Grant funds, according to shelter founder Mildred Jones. The shelter for teen-age runaways faces monetary problems because the federal Department of Health and Human Services reduced its funding by $65,000 for this year, she said.
The shelter at 10911 Reagan St. has already received grants of $3,500 each from Cypress, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach, Jones said. The center provides rooms for runaways, with a capacity of 12 teen-agers, she said.
This marks the first year the shelter has sought assistance from cities besides Los Alamitos, which has given grants to the center since it opened in 1978.
