Billy Olson’s world indoor record pole vault set Saturday was officially reduced by a quarter-inch by The Athletic Congress.
Olson cleared 19 feet 4 inches at the Albuquerque Invitational, but TAC record chairman Bob Hersch said that world records are measured in whole metric numbers and the closest 19-4 translates into metrically is 5.89 meters, or 19-3 3/4. Olson set the record of 19-3 1/2 on Jan. 17 in the Sunkist Invitational at the L.A. Sports Arena.
Olson also has taken the men’s overall lead after the first three meets of the $150,000 USA-Mobil Indoor Track and Field Grand Prix. Olson has 40 points, far ahead of runner-up Jimmy Howard, a high jumper who has 26 points. Sprinter Diane Williams leads the women with 16 points.
