The American Choral Directors Assn. agreed to allow the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles to perform at the association’s western division conference in San Jose on Feb. 15--without deleting the word “gay” from its name. The Los Angeles group was among 19 choruses selected to perform on the basis of tape recordings, but filed suit in Santa Clara Superior Court when its director was told that the invitation would be withdrawn unless the word “gay” was removed. The out-of-court settlement was hailed by Jerry Carlson, director of the Gay Men’s Chorus, as a “major victory.”
