You didn’t need to attend a coaching clinic to understand Ocean View High School’s Sunset League victory over Edison Wednesday.

The Seahawks simply outshot the Chargers en route to a 62-50 win. Ocean View (6-0, 16-4) shot 64% from the field--making 21 of 33 attempts--on the Chargers’ home floor. Edison (2-4, 12-8) made only 19 of 51 attempts for 37%.

Of course, the Seahawks had a distinct advantage. Fifteen of their 33 field goals were from 10 feet or closer. They rarely had to attempt a shot from farther than 15 feet.

Ocean View, which has had trouble getting into its running game lately, ran relentlessly for three quarters. When the Seahawks weren’t getting drives and breakaway layups, they usually got an open 10- to 15-foot shot.

“We got out of the chute right away today,” said Jim Harris, Ocean View coach. “We were running well, getting good shots and making the shots.”

Guard Blaine DuBrouwer, who scored 17 points, got Ocean View moving in the first quarter. He ran by Edison defenders to score eight first-quarter points, all coming off drives that ended with shots in the key.

Guard Shane Morris also benefitted from the fast pace. Morris led Ocean View scorers with 18 points, and he scored all of his points from within six feet.

“I figured if we could get running and get the score up in the 60s we’d have a good chance of winning,” Harris said.

Ocean View’s fast break started with center Ricky Butler. Butler, who scored 17 points, started many a break with a strong outlet pass. Butler and forward Tony Panzica each had 11 rebounds as Ocean View outrebounded Edison, 37-28.

While Ocean View was scoring from close range, Edison was forced to stay outside. Twelve of the Chargers 19 field goals were from 15 feet or farther. Ken Ammann led Edison with 18 points, 12 of them coming on 20-foot jump shots.

Edison stayed close in the first half. The Chargers trailed by five midway through the second quarter before Ocean View made three layups and four free throws to take a 32-21 halftime lead.

The Chargers seemed to tire--they ran a full-court press most of the game--and their shooting accuracy suffered as a result. The Chargers’ frenzied full-court defense also led to numerous fouls. Edison committed 26 fouls, compared to Ocean View’s 16. And the Seahawks scored 20 points on free throws.

Marina 57, Fountain Valley 34--Forward Steve Guild led the Vikings (3-3, 13-9) to the win at Fountain Valley with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Center Mark Georgeson added 15 points and 8 rebounds. Tim Johnson led Fountain Valley (3-3, 12-9) with 9 points.

Huntington Beach 57, Westminster 52 (OT)--Darren Snow made a three-point play to put the Oilers ahead for good with 1:04 left in overtime, 53-50. The Lions’ Chris Chaisson had sent the game into overtime by making a free throw with four seconds left, tying it 48-48. Both teams are 2-4 in league play. Huntington Beach is 8-12 overall and Westminster is 5-14.
