James Martin; Convicted in Probe of Philadelphia Police
Former Deputy Commissioner James Martin, the highest-ranking police officer convicted in the ongoing federal probe of police corruption in this city, has died of cancer.
His death Jan. 25 at 54 came less than a week after a government-appointed doctor said Martin had cancer and would probably not survive the 18-month prison term to which he had been sentenced.
Martin was among more than two dozen officers convicted in the wide-ranging federal probe. He was convicted in August, 1984, of accepting up to $10,000 per week in bribes to protect illegal gambling operations.
