Building Ban Exemption Hearing Set
The City Council Planning and Environmental Committee has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday on a request for an exemption to the building moratorium in the North Westwood Village area next to UCLA.
Westwood Partners wants to replace a 24-unit building at 10965 Strathmore Drive with 69 units. Paul Sigelman of Westwood Partners said an attempt to build a 137-unit apartment/hotel complex on the property was abandoned because of opposition from area residents.
Several residents groups have opposed what they said is overbuilding in the area. They contended that the building of large apartment complexes was depleting the supply of moderate-income housing for UCLA-affiliated students, faculty and staff.
The Westwood moratorium was enacted by the City Council last August to give the city time to update the Westwood housing plan, which is expected to be completed late this year.
