Sudanese troops killed 204 rebels who attacked their convoy in southern Sudan on Feb. 2, the official SUNA news agency said Thursday.

The convoy, carrying garrison pay and supplies, continued to its destination at Leer, 550 miles south of Khartoum, after the clash 25 miles to the north.

The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army earlier this week said it had captured the Leer garrison and pushed the troops there northeast to the town of Adok. The Ethiopian-backed rebels have been fighting a bush war against government troops in the south of the country since May, 1983, with the declared aim of overthrowing the government.
