A recent study at Johns Hopkins University found that only 8% of American women drink heavily, compared to a national study that claims 21% of men are heavy drinkers.

Separated, divorced or single women are more likely to be heavy drinkers, while widows and wives primarily abstain or drink lightly, according to the study, which found that women who drink heavily do so as an escape or nerve calmer, probably because of personal problems.
