Austrian Anton Steiner, 26, posted the first victory of his 11-year skiing career, winning a World Cup downhill race at Morzine, France.

In snapping countrymen Peter Wirnsberger’s string of four consecutive World Cup victories, Steiner finished 7/100ths of a second faster than Switzerland’s Gustav Oehrli and 8/100ths ahead of Wirnsberger.

The leading American, Bill Johnson, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist, finished 10th. Mike Brown of Vail, Colo. was 18th, and Andy Chambers of Jackson, Wyo., 22nd.
