This is in response to Michele I. Beeks’ letter (Jan. 26), “Phrases.”
As a physician inquiring about patients’ illnesses, I get the following response frequently nowadays:
“Do you have a sore throat?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Did you have abdominal pain?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Has your ankle been broken before?”
“Not that I know of.”
It is obviously absurd. I am sure this phrase is used in other inappropriate situations.
