‘Phrases’

Share

This is in response to Michele I. Beeks’ letter (Jan. 26), “Phrases.”

As a physician inquiring about patients’ illnesses, I get the following response frequently nowadays:

“Do you have a sore throat?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Did you have abdominal pain?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Has your ankle been broken before?”

“Not that I know of.”

It is obviously absurd. I am sure this phrase is used in other inappropriate situations.
