A federal judge today sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for assaulting an FBI agent in a scuffle that led to the slaying of the first female FBI agent killed in the line of duty.

U.S. District Judge Alfredo C. Marquez also ordered Kenneth Don Barrett, 27, of Nevada to serve a consecutive five-year term on probation after Barrett pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. Barrett was accused of using Special Agent Lowell Bruce Atkins’ service revolver against him in a scuffle Oct. 4. When the gun was fired into the ground, other agents rushed to lend assistance and Special Agent Robin Ahrens, 33, was killed by gunfire from other officers, FBI officials said.
