A bandit wearing goggles, camouflage-style clothing, and a legionnaire-type hat stole $13,400 from an open safe at a silversmith firm Monday and fled after handcuffing an employee, police said.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said the suspect apparently slipped unseen into Sheffield Platers Inc., 330 W. Date St., shortly before noon and removed $12,000 in cash, $1,400 worth of checks and a pistol from an open safe at the back of the store.

When employee Paul Miller went to the rear of the store, he was confronted by the bandit, who was holding the pistol taken from the safe. Before the bandit fled, he handcuffed Miller with manacles he apparently had brought with him and forced Miller to lie on the floor.
