Only six of 345 blood samples from intravenous drug users attending state-licensed treatment centers were positive for antibodies to the virus that causes the deadly disease AIDS, researchers at the University of California, Davis, reported. Their results, published as a letter in today’s New England Journal of Medicine, contrast sharply with the detection of antibodies in up to 87% of patients undergoing drug detoxification in New York. Few drug users from Southern California were included in the study, and all the positive samples came from San Francisco.
