1 Dead, 50 Hurt in India Riots
The old walled quarter of Delhi was put under indefinite curfew and public meetings of more than five people were banned throughout the capital today after Hindu-Muslim clashes left one dead and more than 50 injured.
Police in riot gear opened fire after tear gas and baton charges failed to quell rampaging mobs in the narrow, crowded streets of the Old City.
The rampage began as 3,000 Muslims streamed out of the Jama Masjid Mosque after Friday prayers and began protesting against a court decision allowing Hindus to reopen a temple at a contested site in the northern city of Lucknow.
