Sovietsky Sport, a Soviet national sports newspaper, stated its opposition Friday to the proposed revision of the International Olympic Charter that would allow pro athletes to compete in the Olympic Games.
“Perhaps the IOC will establish a morality and ethics commission to decide who of the professionals can be admitted and who should be kept away?” the newspaper rhetorically asked. Said Raymond Gafner, IOC administrative director: “In accepting professional athletes, we want to establish equal conditions for all social and political systems. . . . It is evident to us that a state athlete is a professional.”
