A REPRIEVE FOR SADLER’S WELLS THEATER
A Canadian-based multinational has given London’s Sadler’s Wells Theater a lease on life with a gift of $70,000, its director Stephen Remington said.
The gift from Northern Telecom, the telecommunications multinational, meant that the theater, the only one in London catering to ballet, dance and opera, should remain open until July 12, Remington told a news conference.
But he said that the theater’s long-term future is not yet secure. The abolition of the London’s municipal council in March meant that Sadler’s Wells had to find $373,000 to remain open beyond May 17.
Remington said Sadler’s Wells and the Arts Council, which provides public subsidies to the arts, would meet to discuss raising grants for companies that use the theater. This would allow the companies to pay higher rents, he added.
