The Georgia State Boxing Commission put Tim Witherspoon, World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion, on probation for the rest of the year for using marijuana. Witherspoon tested positive for the drug after beating Tony Tubbs for the title at Atlanta Jan. 17.
The five-member commission voted unanimously to suspend Witherspoon, to fine him $500 and to require him to undergo drug testing, take drug education classes and to speak to young Georgians about the dangers of drugs.
Failure to comply, according to the agreement between the boxer and the commission, will result in an automatic revocation of his license in Georgia. If Witherspoon’s Georgia license is stripped, it could keep him from fighting anywhere in the United States. Georgia and the other members of the national Association of Boxing Commissions have an agreement to honor each other’s suspensions.
Witherspoon has admitted smoking marijuana with some friends around Thanksgiving, almost two months before the fight.
