Irvine : Research Grants at UCI Increased 20% in 1985
Research grants at UC Irvine increased by 20% last year for projects in medicine, biological and physical sciences, humanities and the arts, according to the university’s annual report on research.
UCI research received $50 million in federal, state, local and private research awards last year. The average award to an individual researcher increased by almost 10%, to $95,669.
Researchers are studying topics ranging from advances in cancer treatment to the origin and the future of the universe. The university also has programs for the use of lasers in medicine, limb transplants, burn treatment, development of artificial intelligence systems, the mysteries of learning and memory and genetic engineering.
UCI researchers receive most of their funding through contracts and grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Other major contributions come from private agencies, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense.
Additional money came from the University of California, the Veterans’ Administration, the State of California, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Education.
