Auto Insurance

A Times article (Jan. 30) reported the 1984 complaint ratios of auto insurers in California, based on certain data released by the State Insurance Department.

The Liberty Mutual group of companies write nearly $39 million in personal auto insurance in California, of which more than $38.1 million is in the Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Co.

Your report failed to include the criteria upon which the Insurance Department based its report. Only companies having three or more justified complaints were included. Having only one complaint in $38.1 million of premium, the Liberty Fire Insurance Co. was omitted. Only the Liberty Mutual Casualty Co. premiums ($652,000) were included, which presented a distorted view of our results.
