PALERMO, Sicily —
Police today arrested Michele (The Pope) Greco, accused “boss of bosses” of the Sicilian Mafia who had been hunted since June, 1982, in a dawn raid on a farmhouse.
Greco, 61, is a key defendant in the trial of 467 defendants, most accused of Mafia crimes, that opened Feb. 10 in a special $18-million “bunker” courtroom in Palermo. Another court on Nov. 9 sentenced Greco in absentia to life in prison for ordering a Mafia assassination.
