Police reported Wednesday that soldiers shot and killed one man and arrested two on a stretch of road between two villages northwest of Belfast.

A spokesman at Belfast police headquarters said that the arrested men were in police custody for questioning and that two weapons found at the scene by security forces were taken away for tests to see if they had been used in any terrorist attacks.

He gave no other details, but the British Broadcasting Corp. said in its radio bulletins that the operation had the appearance of an anti-terrorist undercover operation.

There was no immediate comment from guerrillas of the mainly Roman Catholic Irish Republican Army or any other group fighting to drive the British from this province, commonly known as Ulster.

The area around the scene of the incident, which occurred between the villages of Toomebridge and Castledawson, was closed to traffic Wednesday.
