Franz Heinzer of Switzerland scored a half-second victory over World Cup overall leader Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg in a men’s downhill ski race at Are, Sweden.

The 23-year-old Heinzer skied down the two-mile course in 1 minute 55.74 seconds to overtake Girardelli. Armin Assinger of Austria surprised the crowd of more than 8,000 by placing third from the 31st starting position.

Bill Johnson of Malibu, the 1984 Olympic downhill champion, recorded the fastest time through the first intermediate clocking but made several mistakes in the middle part of the course and finished 19th in 1:57.71.
