NICOSIA, Cyprus — Iran announced Sunday that it has unearthed the remains of a temple dating to before the time of Jesus.
Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency, monitored in Nicosia, said the temple was uncovered in northwest Iran, in the village of Bowkan.
The agency quoted Ismail Yaghmaei, head of the Iranian archaeological team, as saying a stone table, 32 by 60 inches, was found enscribed in Aramaic. Aramaic, a Semitic language spoken in Biblical times, was the language of Jesus and his disciples.
Yaghmaei also said the remains of cattle were found nearby, suggesting it was the site of sacrificial ceremonies.
