South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan promised to halt a police crackdown on the opposition and said the constitution could be revised in 1989 to allow for direct presidential elections. Chun made the statements during a meeting attended by the leaders of the two main opposition groups, the New Korea Democratic Party and the Korea National Party, and by the second highest ranking member of his Democratic Justice Party. Chun’s remarks appeared to reflect a desire to settle differences with the opposition before the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul.
