The World : Beirut Car Bomb Kills 5

Share

A car packed with 45 pounds of TNT exploded near a supermarket in Christian East Beirut, killing at least five people and wounding a dozen, police reported. One official said that a team of French truce observers, in a nearby truck, may have been the intended victims but that they were unhurt. No group claimed responsibility. In West Beirut, unidentified gunmen assassinated Issam Arab, leader of a small, little-known Sunni Muslim militia called the Nasser Forces. And West Beirut police found the body of Suhail Tawileh, editor of the Lebanese Communist Party’s magazine, who was abducted Sunday. Party officials blamed the extremist Shia Muslim militia Hezbollah (Party of God), which has battled Communist militiamen.
