Philippine Police Seize 13 Crates of New 100-Peso Bills
As President Corazon Aquino vowed today to try to stop a possible outflow of “hidden wealth” from the nation, police on a routine traffic check seized 13 crates containing crisp new 100-peso bills worth about $6.5 million.
The driver of the Datsun pickup, which was registered to the OP (Office of the President), told police that he was transporting the money on behalf of a military officer and that his orders came from Alfredo Romualdez--a brother of departed First Lady Imelda Marcos.
“We do not know where the money was going,” Police Brig. Gen. Narciso Cabrera said. “Nor do we know who it belongs to, but it looks freshly printed.”
According to Cabrera, the truck was stopped on seaside Roxas Boulevard near the U.S. Embassy. The driver, he said, offered the patrol officer a 4,000-peso bribe (about $200 U.S.) to let him pass.
