Javelin thrower Duncan Atwood, banned last week from track and field competition for failing to pass an anti-stimulant control test last summer in West Germany, said he will probably retire.

He said an ailing knee and a new rule involving the javelin--and not the ban--are the reasons he may quit.

“I’ve had six cortisone shots in my left knee, and now it acts like a piece of chicken left too long in the oven. It comes apart easily,” the two-time Olympic team member said.

Atwood, however, didn’t deny taking steroids last summer. “I’ll leave that open to speculation,” he said.
