UC Irvine Women Swim to Records in PCAA Tourney

The UC Irvine women’s swim team was in last place after the first day of the three-day PCAA championships at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, but the Anteaters broke five school records during Thursday’s events.

In the 100-yard butterfly, UCI’s Heidi Werstler was eighth in 59.50, and teammate Lee McKinney was eighth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.31 and 200 individual medley in 2:11.51. Melanie Reed was fifth in the 50 freestyle in 24.61. UCI’s 800 free relay team of McKinney, Reed, Werstler, and Jennfer Luhn broke another school record with a time of 7:56.56.

With two days to go, the University of Hawaii led the team competition with 219.5, UC Santa Barbara was second with 168, Cal State Long Beach third with 148, UNLV fourth with 131.5, Irvine had 73 and was last with 65.
