Ferdinand E. Marcos had a temper tantrum during conversations with State Department officials who told him that the U.S. government cannot protect him from congressional inquiries and lawsuits, according to a published report.

A State Department official, who was not named, said that Marcos was “constantly moaning and groaning” about threatened legal action against him and that he was reconsidering his decision to seek asylum in the United States. After the blow-up, department officers appealed to members of the Marcos family to reason with him.

“He’s sensitive and less than happy with the situation,” a senior department spokesman said of the exiled former president of the Philippines.

“His whole world has collapsed. He thought he was a god,” the official told the San Francisco Examiner. “Now he’s finding out what it’s like to be among us mortals.”
