Lessons From the People of the Philippines

As a Filipino, I must commend you on your extraordinary coverage of the recent events in the Philippines. It makes me proud of the courageous people who fought for the sake of freedom and justice.

Revolution is not a foreign word in the Philippines. Throughout her history, she had to constantly struggle to keep her freedom. Her quest for democratic rule is fierce. Indeed, it was under this pretense that a would-be dictator was elected. The promise to uphold the rights of the poor and the liberty of the citizen was never fulfilled. In fact, it was betrayed.

Simplicity is the lot of a people that till the earth for their sustenance. They are satisfied with their simple life. But when the little that is theirs is taken away, they have no choice but to rebel, even revolt. Indeed, it was the people from the villages, towns, and cities that came together to topple down the yoke of oppression off their shoulders. It came from the grass-roots level growing to a massive proportion that not even the most powerful dare uproot.

What is most impressive to me is the role that the church played in this revolution. When Filipinos saw the corruption of their government, they looked up to the church for direction and leadership. And they were not betrayed. Priests, nuns, bishops, and the cardinal came to the cause. It was not only words from the pulpit but also actions in the street. The church’s preachers practiced what they proclaimed. The gospel call to protect the oppressed was too strong to ignore. Locked in prayer, priest and people came together to exorcise a demon that had been loosed far too long. The cry of the people was heeded. Thanks be to God.

We shall follow closely the succeeding events in the Philippines. We wish but the best for President Corazon Aquino. Her faith, her courage, her firmness will carry her country into a new era. May it be toward tranquility, justice and simplicity, which had been the lot of a courageous people.

Mabuhay ang Filipinas! Long live the Philippines!
