Mother Teresa

The negative reaction toward the work of Mother Teresa and her community in San Francisco--as reported by John Dart (Feb. 23)--is very disheartening. The quoted statements of Valencia Street shop owners and customers reveal a basic ignorance concerning the aspirations of the Missionaries of Charity and a gross insensitivity toward the dire needs of the poor.
Mother Teresa and her religious congregation do not concern themselves with philosophical debates about social awareness. They take action by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and caring for the sick. They reach out--in compassion, love and acceptance--to the casualties of our consumer society.
May Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity continue to comfort the afflicted and, through their example, “afflict” the consciences of the comfortable.
