The decline of the French language has other reasons than the ones mentioned in Stanley Meisler’s article (March 1). One is the sad state of teaching the French language in the United States. When all the French students are required to take English courses, four solid years in secondary schools, American students take a year or two--not enough for basic knowledge--and most students are never exposed to it.

Presidents of France and people in the street can express themselves in English on radio and TV. Can the same thing be said about American presidents and people in the street making commentaries in French?

English language takeover is no glory for this country, at least, for the reason above.
