Leon Haywood was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison for trying to bilk attorney Oscar Goodman out of $50,000 in exchange for information about the jury that convicted former Mayor Roger Hedgecock.

Haywood, 51, could have received 15 years and a $3,000 fine from U.S. District Court Judge Howard Turrentine. No fine was imposed, but Turrentine placed Haywood on five years’ probation on one count, to run after he is released from prison.

Haywood was convicted Jan. 24 of three wire fraud charges. The Encanto resident has been in custody since his Nov. 1 arrest after meeting Goodman in a hotel room to get the money.

Goodman testified that Haywood called him three times at his law office, saying that he had information from jurors that “would be vital for our motion for a new trial.” Goodman said he called the FBI after Haywood demanded $50,000.
