Murphy New Publisher of 2 Arizona Papers

Pat Murphy, a columnist and former editor of the Arizona Republic, will replace Darrow (Duke) Tully as publisher of the Republic and the Phoenix Gazette.

Tully resigned Dec. 26 after it was revealed that the publisher had fabricated an illustrious military career.

Frank E. Russell and Eugene S. Pulliam announced Murphy’s promotion Tuesday. Russell is president of Central Newspapers Inc., the parent company of Phoenix Newspapers Inc. Pulliam is president of PNI, which publishes the two newspapers.

“Pat Murphy was appointed publisher because of his demonstrated editorial ability and experience, his knowledge and love of Phoenix and Arizona and his dedication to newspaper journalism,” Pulliam said.

Murphy will be responsible for the “news and opinion content of both newspapers,” a PNI statement said.

He also was elected a vice president of PNI. Murphy and William R. Hogan, chief business executive of the newspapers, will report to the board of directors.
