A night of torrential rain, high wind and near-freezing temperatures in the Mojave Desert prompted 1,000 peace activists to take an unscheduled rest in their march across the nation. The marchers “decided they would take a day off to dry out,” said John Hagelberg, a spokesman for PRO-Peace, the group organizing the walk. The 970 marchers and 100 staff members began their nine-month journey to urge support for nuclear disarmament on March 1 in Los Angeles. They have traveled about 100 miles so far. The National Weather Service predicted a chance of rain in the desert this morning, when the group planned to head into Barstow.
