Hermosa Beach : Trash Bills to Increase
Trash bills for residents and businesses will go up 7.75% next month, increasing the average residential bill to $6.30 a month from $5.84.
The price increase was approved this week by the City Council as part of an agreement with Browning-Ferris Industries that extends the trash hauler’s exclusive contract with the city for three years.
City officials described the increase as “modest” in light of increased operating expenses incurred by BFI. According to a staff report, the increase was based on a 3.6% inflation rate last year, a 4% increase in labor costs for BFI, a 46% increase in insurance costs for the hauler and a 10% increase in landfill costs.
The price increase puts the rate for trash pickup in Hermosa Beach below rates in Carson, Hawthorne, Torrance and Manhattan Beach but above those in Gardena and Redondo Beach, according to the report.
BFI last received a rate increase in June, when bills went up 5.3%.
